Any time the conversation of becoming successful comes up, the answer seems to always be to work harder. Sometimes it's difficult to figure out just how to work harder. Sometimes the task is to figure HOW to work harder. You don't want to throw yourself undisciplined in the direction of your dreams because you'll most likely end up with something looking like noodle soup instead of lasagna.
Work smarter, not harder. Perfect practice makes perfect. Read. Research. Ask questions. Google. Watch. Study. Find someone you respect as a horseman or horsewoman and spend as much time around him or her as you can. Learn what doesn't work just as much as what does work. Make yourself available to learn. Ride everything you can. Be patient with your horse and yourself. Reward often, discipline quickly and effectively (and that goes for yourself!).
Realize that success doesn't happen overnight. It doesn't even happen in a decade sometimes. It does take putting one foot (or hoof) in front of the other and pushing through all the walls and obstacles that come your way. But if you keep chiseling away at your skills every day, you will get better. Just make sure you put your energy in a constructive direction and have a plan. And never be afraid to ask or look for help!
